Novice and experienced makers welcome
Join Teaching Artist Jeri Hillis in this one day block printing textile workshop. Block printing is a traditionally, easy, non-toxic, and adaptable way to print patterns on fabric. Students will learn the steps of printing on fabric, from designing their own composition, motif or pattern, making and carving their own linoleum block, experimenting with stamps made from foam, eraser, string and wood and using a stencil, to working with inks to create their own custom printed fabrics. Learn to transfer a design to the block, carve away lines, negative spaces, play with this immediate and versatile technique, building up a variety of patterns with a repetition such as half drop, half brick, centered and mirror.
Students will leave the workshop with prints on paper, patterns on fabric and a completed design print on a pillow cover. Come to the class with an idea, sketch, or get inspired. You are welcome to bring your own fabrics to print on, such as tea towels, cloth napkins, tote bag, quilt blocks, scarves or other materials.
