Description
October 8 – Joan Mitchell Helen Frankenthaler and others – Gestural Landscapes
In the first evening we will create a landscape of our own with loose brush work exploring atmosphere and emotion through color. We will discuss the symbolism and emotional response in the use of color.
October 15 – Lee Krasner – Painted Collaged Papers
On to collaged painted papers. We will paint numerous papers in a several colors. Using scissors or simply tearing the papers and assembling them on to canvas or other substrate create a abstract composition that could resemble a landscape, forest, cityscape, or sky or seascape. So here also color will have emotional context.
October 22 – Lois Dodd and Gabriele Munter – Traditional Landscapes
In this class we will be painting more traditional styles of landscape painting like fields, forests, oceans, and sky spread out horizontally or mountains and city buildings rising tall upward. There will be a focus on direction, leading the eye of the viewer into and through the painting and looking at how the color of weather can affect mood and emotion. Various painting styles and techniques can be used to represent a landscape. We will be using acrylic paint, mixing from the primary colors. Our landscape may be imaginary or may come from a photograph.
October 29 – Bridget Riley and Agnes Martin – Pattern and Geometry
In this workshop we will continue to work with color and our response to it, but it will be confined with geometric design. Two women artists that explored the fantastic world of pattern and geometry are Bridget Riley and Agnes Martin. These women also chose to work with color and repetitive patterns. Our works do not have to be a strict, they can be as loose as a Zantangle if you wish.
