Costume Design Class (ages 12 and up)
September 16-November 18, 2021
Age 12 and up, vaccines and masks required
Local students with an interest in costume design and construction will have the rare opportunity to participate in the costume design and construction workshop held at Emergent Arts for this year’s Hot Springs Children’s Dance Theater presentation of the classical ballet, The Nutcracker. The workshop will focus on the design and creation of period costumes and the tailoring required for a specific performers’ size and the physical challenges of the choreography. The grace and rigors of classical ballet require very light weight and flexible costumes that also offer the dancers quick change capabilities.
William G. Henshaw will serve as the lead artist for this project. Mr. Henshaw is a tenured professor of theater at Henderson State University. Specializing in costume and makeup design he has held the post of resident costume designer for the past 21 years creating the designs for at least four theatre and one dance production a year.
William G. Henshaw has also worked in many capacities in professional theatres around the country; from his role as a costume technician at Oregon Shakespeare Festival and at the Santa Fe Opera to that of designer at the Oklahoma Shakespearean Festival and at the Houston Children’s Summer Theatre. His extensive experience in this field will be invaluable to our students.
