Description

October 7 – Carve and Inlay Glaze Tile – Mishima Technique
In method students will carve into a leather hard white clay tile. Students will have one under glaze colors to apply to the surface of the one day dryer tile to accent their designs. This glaze will fall into the carved areas. Then the glaze is scraped off with a flat tool (metal rib scraper or old credit card)  Take care to go slowly. You can transfer a drawn design to the surface of the tile if you wish.

October 14 – Sgraffito Tile
Students will paint with a black under glaze on a leather hard white clay tile, at least 3 coats, letting the glaze dry in between coats, brushing on in alternating directions. Once the glaze has dried somewhat, a hair dryer may be used, we will carve a design or picture into the surface of the tile. Take care to go slowly. You can transfer a drawn design to the surface of tile if you wish.

October 21 – 3-Dimensional Tile
Students will be provided with a firm but not too hard clay tile that they will add clay to build up its surface to create a low relief three-dimensional design or picture using the techniques of slip/score to secure raised design pieces. Incising and carving can be another design technique to utilize. Take care to go slowly. You can transfer a drawn design to the surface of tile if you wish.

October 29 – Under Glaze Painting on Bisque Tile
Students will paint with underglaze glazes in a watercolor style to create an image, design or landscape, similar to watercolor imagery. This bisque tile will have a white under glaze painted on the surface to facilitate the painting. Drawings can be transferred to the tile surface with pencil or traced.
